When tragedy strikes, it comes out of nowhere. And it can feel daunting to try to recover when you weren’t able to prepare beforehand.
But by being here, you’re in the right starting place. With some guidance, you can start healing and helping those around you. Natural disasters and traumatic situations aren’t predictable. But with the right resources, you can take small steps toward positive progress.
Whether you have been affected by the terrible flooding in the Texas Hill Country directly or indirectly, or you just want to help – we have places for you to turn to.
If You or Your Children Have Been Affected by the Tragedy
Children can require extensive support to overcome a traumatic event. For starters, oftentimes a lot of cuddling and verbal reassurance are needed, especially for young children. You should answer any questions they have but be sure to be gentle while being honest.
Another great way to support their healing is to encourage children to express all their feelings through open communication. Let them know they are being heard and loved through it all. (Writing, drawing and painting can help them express their feelings if the words don’t come easily.) Additionally, try to maintain a typical household routine as much as possible, but be willing to adapt to changing emotions. Make sure you are getting down on their level as well when talking to them. After all, would you want to feel like you are having to talk to Big Tex?
Please also be sure to acknowledge your own feelings during these challenging times. Take the necessary steps for your emotional and physical healing in relation to this tragedy. Often times, the parents are struggling more but turn their focus on the kids which is totally understandable. However, the best way to model for them is for you to get your help as well and work through your own stuff!
